Electric DEPOT — Stories from the Run

During Run on Less – Electric DEPOT the NACFE team had the opportunity to interview 122 people from fleets, utility companies, truck manufacturers, infrastructure developers, charger manufacturers, charge management companies, climate organizations and more.

From our interviews we developed a series of Stories From The Run which we have compiled here in both video and blog format. These videos and blogs supplement the data collected during the Run and add flavor and context to what we learned from the data.

Total Cost of Ownership

People ask what the total cost of ownership of a battery electric truck is. The accurate and easy answer is we don’t know yet. The upfront costs, the infrastructure costs, the resale value, the maintenance and repair — a lot of those are unknown at this point.

Servicing EVs

Ultimately maintenance on electric trucks should be dramatically reduced compared to diesel trucks. There will not be a lot of brake wear because of the regenerative braking. Electric motors are robust and have a long expected life.

Extended Range

Range is one of the biggest challenges we have with battery electric trucks. A lot of people think that it is only how far a vehicle can go on one charge. What we are seeing is multiple charges within the driver’s hours of service.

Environmental Justice

Electric vehicles are beginning to be deployed in areas that are typically disadvantaged — places that will really benefit from these trucks. Diesel trucks are bringing a lot of carbon emission into some communities resulting in high asthma and respiratory illness rates. Transitioning to cleaner fuels is incredibly important not only for the environment but also for public health.

Lessons Learned with Utilities

BEV infrastructure is more in-depth than many people think. There is a learning curve for both the fleet and the utility. Engaging early and working together will ensure a more successful experience. When it comes to infrastructure, communication between fleets and utilities is critical. And that communication needs to take place early and be transparent.
